What is Shodashopachara Puja?

The Sanskrit word Shodasha means sixteen, while Upachara refers to a form of reverential service or offering.

Shodashopachara Puja is therefore an elaborate form of worship in which Devi is traditionally honoured through sixteen forms of devotional service.

The exact sequence of the sixteen Upacharas may vary according to the Paddhati, Sampradaya, family tradition and form of Devi being worshipped.

According to the selected Sankalpa and tradition, worship may be offered to Sri Durga or another appropriate manifestation of the Divine Mother.

Navratri — Worship of Divine Shakti

Navratri is a sacred period dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mother in her various manifestations.

In the Shakta tradition, Devi is revered as Shakti — the Divine Power associated with courage, wisdom, protection, prosperity, spiritual strength and transformation.

During Navratri, devotees traditionally perform Devi Puja, Mantra Japa, Durga Saptashati Path and Homa while praying for spiritual strength, family well-being, peace, prosperity, righteous opportunities and progress in important areas of life.

At Namaste Pandit Ji, devotees can select an appropriate Puja, Path or Homa according to their family tradition, spiritual intention and preferred form of Devi worship.

The Nine Forms of Navadurga

During the nine nights of Navratri, the Divine Mother is traditionally worshipped in nine forms:

  • Shailaputri
  • Brahmacharini
  • Chandraghanta
  • Kushmanda
  • Skandamata
  • Katyayani
  • Kalaratri
  • Mahagauri
  • Siddhidatri

Each form represents a distinctive spiritual quality and reminds devotees of courage, discipline, wisdom, devotion, purification, strength and spiritual fulfilment.
